Laser Printing and Materials Processing (LMP)

The group of Laser Materials Printing and Processing (LMP) is headed by Prof. Ioanna Zergioti, and is located at the Physics Department of the National Technical University of Athens. The group's research activities encompass laser materials processing for optoelectronics and biological applications.

Laser additive manufacturing
Laser digital fabrication of electronics devices

After years of innovative research in laser printing and sintering of advanced materials, LMP group is now capable of achieving laser printing (using the Laser Induced Forward Transfer technique) and laser sintering of conductive materials at speeds > 1m/s, with resolution down to <10μm. Demonstrations of LIFT and Laser sintering of conductive materials include digital die attachment, flexible and 3D interconnections, transparent and conductive electrodes for organic photovoltaics and a variety of state of the art sensors. More than 20 publications in peer-reviewed journals have built on these results, as well as a PCT patent - PCT/EP2023/083610. Recently, the group has developed a digital, laser - based method for transferring single layer graphene and 2D materials at chip - and wafer – level for developing 2D electronics (e.g. Graphene FETs) and sensors with transducers incorporating 2D materials. 2D material related results have been published in 4 peer-reviewed articles and have constituted the basis for 2 patents, a PCT - WO2022248893A1 and a US patent - US2022380901A1.

Laser bioprinting

LMP group is also highly experienced in laser materials processing for biological and pharmaceutical applications. Among the main achievements of the group is the use of laser pulses to directly print a variety of biomolecules on biosensors, polymers on chemical sensors and also pharmaceutical ingredients on patches for oral or transdermal delivery. Moreover, the group has recently developed a method for bioprinting of: (i) cancer cells in a comparative DNA damage study, achieving a viability rate exceeding 94%, (ii) lung cancer cells onto an organ-on-chip (OoC) platform for the purpose of studying lung cancer migration and iii) bioinks containing primary mouse smooth muscle and urothelial cells, sequentially, on a variety of substrates, for potential use in engineered ex vivo bladder grafts. The related results of laser printing of biomaterials have been protected in a patent, PCT - WO 2019/129349 A1, US20200324564A1.

The successful outcomes of the aforementioned activities have been leveraged with the establishment of the spin-off company PhosPrint (https://www.phosprint.eu/) which was established in 2019. PhosPrint has recently received an EIC Accelerator grant- Project 190195672 “Laser bioprinting device and in vivo applications”.
